Happy Holidays - Thank You For A Great Year!
As the year winds down and we enjoy the holiday season, I like to reflect and give thanks. One of the constants we see every year is change, and this year is no different. The landscape continues to change as states move forward implementing economic nexus and companies evaluate how best to comply. There have been some big winners like eCommerce sellers who only sell on marketplaces. In many instances, these sellers no longer have to worry about sales tax going forward and we are helping many of our clients deregister. The future looks very bright for these sellers.
However, not everyone is so lucky. Companies selling into multiple states and their advisors are finding their futures more complex
Not only do these companies have to navigate the new rules on where they may have to register to collect tax, but many are also finding that states are expanding their tax base, and what may not have been taxable in the past may now be taxable. In addition, as states increase their discovery efforts looking for those who are not complying with economic nexus, they are finding other companies who may have had nexus for years. Independent and/or subcontractors are often the cause of this exposure.
Here at Sales Tax and More, eCommerce marketplace sellers have been a large part of our practice
We are saying goodbye to many valued clients and friends. It is bittersweet. While we are saddened these clients are leaving, we are happy for them. We are glad they no longer have to wrestle with sales tax. We are extremely grateful that these clients chose us for their state tax needs and they have been instrumental in our success. We wish them continued success in their businesses and stand ready to assist should their business models change.
Some of our clients have asked if the departure of our marketplace-only sellers will impact our business, and I smile as I answer, “of course.” But 2019 has been a banner year for us, and I expect it to continue for a long time going forward. While those leaving have much to be thankful for, there are many more companies and their advisors who need assistance.
In 2019, we saw our work with CPAs and other accounting professionals explode exponentially; We attribute much of this to our free educational webinars that provide free CPE credit
While some attend just for the CPE, we have been told by countless attendees that we make complex concepts easy to understand. We want to thank everyone who has attended a webinar and provided feedback.
As I matter of fact, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our clients large and small for choosing us to handle your state tax needs. No matter how you found us, we are glad you did. We could not be successful without you. We have many exciting new services we will be launching in 2020 in response to many of your requests.
Lastly, I would like to thank all our employees here at Sales Tax and More. While I may be biased, I believe we have the best team bar none. I could not be more proud of the never-ending effort and professionalism they put forth every day. Our success is a testament to their passions.
This past year has been a banner year for us. I can’t wait to see what we will achieve in 2020.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays,
Mike Fleming
