This webinar is the third in our new series of eight webinars. The series is called the Seven Pillars of a Successful Sales Tax Strategy and is a deeper dive into each of the seven pillars addressed in the two-part introductory webinar of the same name.
In this webinar, state tax expert Michael Fleming will cover rates and sourcing, answering the question, “What rates should I use?” The answer to this question can differ from tangible personal property to services to digital products. Mike will also go over destination sourcing and origin-based sourcing.
Local rates and how to source them is an area that is becoming more important since Wayfair. Mike will touch on local rates and on the factors that can impact which rate to use. He will also provide a list of states that do not have local rates.
Mike will also touch on some common sourcing pitfalls, provide some real-life examples, and wrap up by speaking about how to source rates.
Key Topics:
Rates
Sourcing
Origin vs. Destination Sourcing
Sourcing of Digital Property
Local Rates
Understanding rates and sourcing can sometimes seem tricky and unclear. In this session, Michael Fleming will help clear the air with a sound common sense approach to understanding rates and sourcing. The first step is knowing if you or your clients have nexus, then you will know if you need the other pillars of a successful sales tax strategy. The seven pillars include nexus, taxability, rates, use tax, exemptions, registrations/amnesties and VDAs, and returns. The last webinar in the series is sales tax audit defense.
This session is especially of interest to companies and/or their advisors who guide them through the maze of tax changes for multistate sellers.
